Over that time, I have identified many daily challenges parents still face. Mainly from the overwhelming amount of information from so many well-meaning sources. The moment you find out you are expecting… It's a minefield.

The one area that has the greatest contention is feeding. "Breast is Best', is a catch phrase commonly drilled into mothers. Whilst this phrase may be true in many aspects, it comes with challenges and is often a journey that needs support.

Over the last two decades, the "Breast is Best" message has been so acute that even bottle manufacturers jumped on board. As a result, wide-neck bottles and many different shaped teats have come onto the market to 'feel like and look like' a breast. There is no comparison to a breast. How a baby feeds on the breast is a completely different biological experience to sucking on silicon. Wide-neck bottles, therefore, encourage an unnatural feeding experience using their splayed lips to seal (sucking blister can often be seen) and draw using their lower jaw because there are no biological receptors in the silicon to trigger a let down. (I.e. no areola).

Consequently, many babies refuse or have a hard time taking a wide-neck bottle and, in my experience, end up going hungry. This results in an overtired, grumpy, non-sleeping baby, as the hunger instinct is a baby's first and foremost survival instinct. Therefore, they can't and won't sleep if they don't have a full tummy.

Thinking back to the "good old days", we all grew up on a basic, narrow-neck teat and bottle. This was because scientifically, it was acknowledged and understood that with no areola to trigger a natural let down, we had to use our other natural sucking reflex stimulated through a natural connection between a baby's palate and tongue.

Lil'Kooee has come to fruition because every day, I request parents purchase a narrow-neck bottle to assist with their baby's feeding experience. Yet, the ones on the market have either no air release valve, a difficult funnel to clean, or teats that are a Y cut - don't even get me started on those!

I have designed a bottle and teat that removes all the difficulties around bottle feeding. Every maternity hospital only offers a narrow-neck bottle feeding option - why? Because biologically, we know it's the right option. Every hospital around the world cannot be wrong!
